Will Instagram Reels Help Your Business? What You Should Know About the New Feature

Instagram Reels

It’s no secret anymore: the President isn’t happy with TikTok, so he’s trying to do away with it. While it’s sad for many within the TikTok community, it’s opening up other apps to try and replicate their own versions of an app similar to TikTok. For Instagram, this meant the creation of Instagram Reels.

While it’s commendable, you also need to proceed with caution. Instagram reels seems like a cool new tool on social media for business, but is it the right choice for yours? Here’s what you should know.

The Instagram Reels Algorithm

Since Instagram Reels is still in somewhat of a beta stage, the algorithm for it hasn’t been totally implemented yet. While it’s likely people see reels from those they follow (similar to TikTok’s “TikTok for You”), what people can explore beyond what they follow is still limited.

The “Explore” option does take into account a person’s content, who they follow, and their location before suggestion videos. There’s room for Instagram Reels to grow its algorithm for its users, but it’s not there quite yet. At this time, your business would likely only reach those who already follow it or live in the area.

The Length of Reels

Instagram Reels are so much shorter than TikTok videos. While TikTok can host videos up to one minute long, Instagram Reels are limited to 15 seconds. That doesn’t leave a lot of time for much meaningful content.

If you want to promote informal content, like you would on TikTok, Instagram Reels isn’t going to leave you enough time to engage in a meaningful way with your audience. What kind of content can you create in 15 seconds that fully explains what your business does or provides?

For any digital marketing agency, this is definitely a challenge. However, if you’re developing quick and easy content, it might not be a bad option. If you’re just showcasing products, it’s a good route to go.

Money? What Money?

When looking for a social media business boost, Instagram Reels is not going to be bringing in much revenue for you and your business. Since Reels is still an experiment, there’s no room yet for advertisers and branded content.

If you’re putting in time on social media to promote your business, you might want to consider an app that will monetize you for your work. Otherwise, it’s a lot of work for not much pay-off.

Instagram Reels isn’t yet working on a monetization process, but you can still experiment and see how well Reels works. Who knows, maybe someday soon Instagram will unveil monetization off of Reels.

Worth a Try, but Don’t Count on It

Though Instagram Reels is new and exciting, it’s probably not going to offer what you need to promote your business, at least not yet. There’s room for it to grow, but for now, it’s good for experimentation in short content and not much else.

Don’t spend too much time trying to make it work yet. Instagram Reels could possibly grow like Stories did (now over 500 million users use Stories), but Instagram has to get a few more things in order before that. Have fun experimenting, though!
