Remember when SEOs used to duke it out over the number one keyword in their niche? The websites on the front page would give each other a good run for their money and it was all about building for that one big win.

SEOs are moving more toward long-tail keywords not only because they are easier to rank for but because the traffic that comes from long-tail keywords is much more targeted. Someone searching for “review of product xyz model 123” is more likely to be at the end of the buying cycle than someone searching for “what is the best solution for xyz problem?”

Exact-Match Keywords Aren’t As Important

Not too many years ago, if you wanted to rank for a keyword in your niche, you had to make sure you had content that targets that keyword exactly or you weren’t going to rank. Google and other search engines are getting smarter now and they can figure out synonym and closely related content.

The smarter search engines get, the easier it is going to be for them to show the best content for the topic even if the exact keywords aren’t in the content. Now if you write an article targeting “how to choose the best truck to two your RV” and it is a great article, you might also rank for “how to choose the best truck to tow your fifth wheel” because the search engines understand that is the same thing.

As Google and other search engines understand user intent and what they’re looking for more and more, SEOs will almost have to learn how to read their potential client’s minds in order to get in front of them to try to secure the sale or at least get them as a lead.
